Where Are We?

Last week Room 1 began learning about, maps, directions and position in maths. We used Google Maps to find our houses. Then we took a screenshot of our house and printed it out.

When everyone had a picture we went onto the AstroTurf. We imagined that the centre of the turf was Glenview School and that the end with the gate was North. Then we moved around and sat where we thought our houses were in relation to the school and each other. Lots of people lived close to school. A few people lived close to each other in the North. Darragh and Kate are nearly neighbours to the South East of school.

Next we have to check if we were sitting in the correct spot. We’re going to do this the old fashioned way, with a wall map and some map pins.

Where Would You Go?

I found this advert on the Internet. Where would you go? What would you see? Who would you meet?

Write down your thoughts and send me your answers to michaelf@glenview.school.nz for publishing here. Add a picture if you like.

Nature by Numbers

Awesome geometry, Fibonacci and Golden Sections in nature.

We have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes in Room 11. We also looked at the patterns in numbers and times tables; and found the Fibonacci sequence. This video shows how some of the shapes and numbers appear in nature.

Hi Room 13.  I made a Wordle from your Production google document. Click the picture to see it full size.  What do you think?  Is there anything missing?  You can add ideas in the comments if you like.

Your Face in Space

My daughter knows I love everything to do with space and space travel so she sent me a link to this site.  You can be a part of space history and send your photo to space aboard the last space shuttle missions.  If you want to do it you’ll have to get a parent to help because you have to be over 13 to take part.

If you want to do this at school ask your parent(s) to write me a note giving permission.  I’ve already done mine and I can’t wait to get the certificate in November when STS-134 (Endeavour) lands back on earth.

Here’s me at school last year with astronaut Colonel Eric Boe.  He was the pilot of the Endeavour in November 2008.

BP Oil Spill Disaster

Do you remember the oil spill we were discussing a few weeks ago?  Well it’s still leaking.  Here’s what it wold look like if it had happened in Hamilton (click the map for a larger view).

Imagine all that oil in the ocean.  What effect do you think it will have on the creatures that live and feed there?  What about the beaches nearby?  How on earth are they going to fix it?  Add your thoughts to the comments.

Here’s the website where I found the map.

Interface

Wow! We got featured on a website.

Interface is a magazine and website that lets teachers learn more about how to use ICT and technology in their classrooms.  They featured us on their webpage with two other class blogs, Moturoa Blog in Nelson and Livewires in Puahue.  Awesome!

Holidays

Hi Room 13.  I hope you’re all enjoying the break and have done some interesting things.  A week has gone by already and only 10 more days until we’re back at school.

Have you a story to tell?  Have you been somewhere or done something exciting?  Send your story in an email.  Do you have photos or video to share?  Send them in an email and add a story to describe or explain them.

See you in 10 days.

Thirty Thousand Page Views

30000

It doesn’t seem long ago since Room 9 did this last year, but I just checked and our class blog has had 29, 169 visits. It took 3 years to reach 20,000 and just 6 months to reach nearly 30,000 visits.

On April 4, 2009...

We have about 100 visitors every day from all over the world, but that won’t be enough for us to reach 30, 000 before we finish school on Thursday afternoon.

It looks like we’ll have to celebrate our 30, 000 milestone after the holidays.  Well done to everyone who has published their writing, artwork, photos or movies.  Special thanks to the Room Niners, parents and family who have commented on blog posts and an extra special thank you to all the people in New Zealand and around the world who have visited and commented.

Cupcakes all round next term! [shall we make them and bake them ourselves?]

Holidays

Hello new Room Niners.  Only 3 weeks of holiday left – make sure you enjoy them.  I suppose you’ve all been away to the beach and if you haven’t you’ll be off somewhere soon.  I’ve just got back from Napier where I’d been camping with my family for a week.

We had a look around the town at all the buildings that were rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake. Later we went for a walk by the sea and a drive up to a viewpoint on Bluff Hill that overlooks the port.

The next day we went to The National Aquarium of New Zealand – Te Whare Tangaroa o Aotearoa.  There were heaps of things to see, sharks, stingrays, piranha, a crocodile, eels, a 3 metre long giant squid (dead) and lots of others.  I made a video to show you some of the things we saw. How many animals can you name in the video?

Now I’m starting to get ready for school, the new term and a new class.  What have you been doing? E-mail me at glenview9@gmail.com and let me know.

Straw Tower

We have a pack of building straws in Room 9.  Last Wednesday I came back from morning tea to find this-

The only thing that stopped them going higher was they ran out of straws!  I wonder how high they could go?

Bird Models

We made some bird models.  Even though we call them papier mache -they’re not really.

Bird Models on Flickr

Bird Models on Flickr

You need -

plenty of newspaper

some wide brown parcel tape or masking tape

kitchen towels

pva glue

card/cardboard

other bits and pieces (for feet, beak, legs)

hot glue gun

(a hairdryer is useful too)

Scrunch up the newspaper into the rough shape of the bird’s body.  Tape it together with the sticky tape.

Scrunch up newspaper into head shape and tape up.

Connect the head and body with tape.

Cut out wings (open or closed) and tail from card and tape on.

Cover the whole thing with strips of kitchen towel (about 5cm x 2cm) glued on with PVA,

When it’s all dry (use the hairdryer to help if you’re in a hurry) you can add the beak, feet, eyes and other details with a hot (ouch) glue gun.  We made them out of wire, drinking straws, dressmaking pins, bamboo skewers, plastic plates, old pens and anything else we thought looked good.

Carefully paint your bird with its main colours.  We found it best to mix paint on the bird.  Finally paint the beak, feet, eyes and any other details you think need adding.  Let it (hair)dry.

Finished!

Visitors from New York

Tackan from Google Earth

Tackan from Google Earth

Wow!  We have been contacted by a class of fourth graders at Tackan Elementary School, Smithtown, New York in the USA. They would love to find out about life and school in New Zealand  We’ll use comments on this post and on their blogpage to pass messages back and forth.

What would you like to ask our visitors?  What can you tell them about Hamilton and New Zealand?
